I am only part way in and am now having to convince myself to keep reading. I found the scene in Chapter 9 about the blood draw very disturbing, it was abusive and bordered on forced violation of her body. Wade physically restrained her and then they forcibly inserted a needle and took her blood. Some might call this rape! And since when is being part of a group so forced with a very obvious "Or else" attached!?!?! Cult much!?!?!
I will try to go on from Chapter 10 but this book might end up in my "started but..." file on the Kindle. If I manage to make it the rest of the way through I will update this review but I have serious doubts about this one. SAD

Harley Merlin and the Secret Coven eBook Bella Forrest Reviews

I love this author’s books, and this novel, the first in the new Harley Merlin series is satisfying and fun to read, just as I expected. I like the titular character, an orphan and kick-butt protagonist whose growing-up years were spent in the system. Although Harley Smith has certain odd powers (she’s an empath and can use telekinesis), she is in many ways like any other young adult trying to find her place in the world. She turns her powers toward her job, detection of cheaters at a casino, but a chance encounter with a magical monster has her questioning everything. Turns out the place she belongs is the San Diego coven—Harley is a witch! With annoying, slightly officious and prissy, yet somehow enticing, endearing, and exciting Wade at her side, Harley embarks on her new life. The coven is in trouble, she finds. Soon she must help Wade and her other newfound colleagues uncover a traitor, one who is somehow tied to her by blood, as well as begin to piece together the mysteries of her parentage and lineage. Harley is not a Smith at all; she is the last Merlin, a proud name that stretches back to Arthurian legend. I recommend this series highly. It satisfies on many levels and leaves the reader hungry for more.
I never in a million years thought she could top A Shade of Vampire series! But sure enough she did this book is fantastic! I loved every second of it I was completely enthralled! This book starts out with a girl who knows absolutely nothing about herself except for the fact that she's an orphan, she can tell what people are feeling and has a few magical abilities. She accidentally discovers the Magical World finding out who her parents are and finds a new family in the process. I can't wait for the next one I'm on the edge of my seat!
The magical community set up in the story was unique and interesting. The plot twists were almost too good- as in there was no build up or foreshadowing, just something totally unexpected. The tone, writing style, and character voice is a little "cheap romance-y" for me, but hey, I bought the second book already, so it's definitely tolerable. I definitely wish the super-strong female lead was written with a more powerful voice.
Omg Bella Forrest where have you been all my life!!! I’m a huge fan of Harry Potter and now this series i am instantly hooked!! Prepare your yourself for a great story & to specially fall in love with Harley from the jump! She’s fierceless hilarious and very straight foward, I love all the different magic practices from all over the world i honestly can’t wait to see where this story is going!!! Well done Bella you never disappoint me i swear!
This book was advertised as the next book to read after Harry Potter. NO. Just no.

The first book was the best one I read out of 2 1/2. I stopped reading in the middle of the 3rd book. The premise after the introductory book is that there is this insanely powerful evil magician on the loose and out for blood and they have a handful of teenagers just coming into their "powers" and still being trained at the weakest coven in the world who they have put in charge of finding and eliminating her. In reality, for an evil woman this bad they would have had the greatest magicians from the greatest covens in the world after her. But they don't seem to care at all. I would have enjoyed reading about the great magicians battling this evil woman but instead I got to read about bumbling teenagers and their love interests instead.

By the time you get to the second book, the author begins to get potty mouthed (if you have kids or just don't enjoy bad language, like me), and begins adding sexual innuendo, and yet her writing level goes down to junior high level with such engaging comments as "You could've heard a gnat fart." My son at 10 would have enjoyed it, but I would not have let him read it due to the bad language and sexual innuendo.

So, no, I don't recommend the books. The first was OK. It went downhill after that.
This one was a bit more Y than YA for me. Very predictable but the world building was a bit different from the norm. It does, however, feel like it draws a lot from the Harry Potter books in terms of how the magic works and the points scoring.

The characters are quite interesting except for the heroine's love interest who is hard to like. The bad guys are a bit wimpy and there seems to be a whole bunch of twenty year olds running around like ten year olds throughout the book. The writing is clear and the plot moves along nicely but I just found that everything seemed very obvious to me.

I will certainly be reading the sample of the next book but am not ready to jump into the series just yet.
This reads like a teenager wrote it. The vocabulary is limited and sometimes just a little off the mark. Sometimes it comes across as if she used a thesaurus and chose words that sound fancy, with no regard for the nuanced meaning.

There is also the odd glaring grammatical error that makes it difficult to take this writing seriously. Who edited this?

Similar to the vocabulary problem, the characters display a limited, and also sometimes misplaced, range of affect, as if the author lacks emotional insight.

As for the story line, I was bored by the end of chapter 2. It is formulaic and predictable. The gift of a good genre author is to make even a genre that is supposed to be predictable (like young adult fantasy and some romance novels) feel fresh and fun to read. I was hopeful that the empath angle might be the fresh element, but it did not succeed.

I will not buy the next one.
