There can be recovery, even if it doesn't happen within the addict. Sandy lives where love and addiction meet - a place where help enables and hope hurts. When addiction steals her son, Sandy fights for his survival, trying to stay on the right side of an invisible line between helping him to live and helping him to die. By age 20, Joey overdoses, attempts suicide, quits college, survives a near-fatal car accident, does time behind bars, and is kicked out of rehab more than once. Increasingly manipulative, delusional, and hateful, the sweet Joey from childhood is lost to the addict wearing his face.
Working with an interventionist, a judge, and tracking Joey's movements online, Sandy does what she can to save Joey from himself until it hurts more to hang on than it hurts to let go. Through Family Programs, Al-Anon, reading, and learning from her mistakes, Sandy discovers that sometimes love means doing nothing, and that letting go is not the same thing as giving up. She also learns that she needs to work on surviving her son's addiction while coming to terms with the fact that he may not.
Years pass. Friends and family no longer ask about Joey; they no longer know what to say. Joey is not in recovery, but Sandy works on hers, trying to keep the poison that is consuming Joey from destroying the rest of her family and her life. She starts a program to teach young men living in a group home how to budget, grocery shop, and cook, hoping that someone will someday help her own son in some way that she cannot. As in the song she sang to him so many times, Sandy keeps Joey down in her heart to stay. There is a place in her life that is exactly his size. One she hopes he will someday want to fill.
This is the poignant story of a defiant addict and the mother who won't give up on him. She finally realizes that it hurts more to hang on than to let go, and that letting go is not the same thing as giving up.

The Joey Song A Mother Story of Her Son Addiction (Audible Audio Edition) Sandra Swenson Lori FelipeBarkin Central Recovery Press Books Reviews
Fabulously written, heartfelt and very real portrayal of the dis-ease of addiction.
Unfortunately very relatable, I could not put it down. It is the story of my son and the tragedy of drug addiction and alcoholism.
All of the feelings are there, the shame, the judgement, the looks and whispers, as society quietly blames the problem on bad parenting,
Mourning the loss of hopes and dreams, a mothers desperation to "fix" her son. An amazing read!
I just finished reading "The Joey Song". Reading it was like reading a lot of our own story. Our family dynamic is a little different, and it made me question myself as a parent, mistakes I have made and what I did to make my daughter want to start doing drugs to be numb. For the most part, most of us parents with addicts did the best we could, we also know in our minds that we didn't do this to our kids, but in our hearts we constantly wonder what we could have or should have done differently. I found myself shaking my head during some of the stories, the things our addicts come up with to manipulate and get their way. The blatant disrespect, entitlement and abuse, and it's still not their fault. Ever. It's so easy to see what's going on from the outside, but not when it's your own child. You want to believe the good in them, even if it's for a moment, that they're in there somewhere just struggling to get back out. As a parent, looking for that magic word or thing we can do to get them back on track. It's gut wrenching and soul sucking. It was an emotional and well written read. It helps you to see you're not alone. Thanks for writing this book. I hope it helps all of us, who unfortunately have been there, or are there, to be strong and stay strong when we need to, and that even though we have a huge hole in our hearts that we can get on with our own lives, and live. My prayers are with you all. Thanks for writing.
I actually messaged Sandra for writing this book. I've been struggling with my Joey since he was 16, he is 25 now. It's been a huge roller coaster ride. I bought the book because of my Joey, and then the song...yep that's also my joy joy joy. It was amazing. I'm not wealthy, and Joey hasn't had a lot of great chances, but he's had many choices he could have made, and he chose the big h. It's terrible on the family, as a mom you're trying so hard to help him that you're not paying attention to the ones trying to do good. My Joey is currently in jail as of last week. I got the book Saturday and was finished Sunday evening. Thank you Sandra, I let go. I hope this helps him. Last Christmas I was picking him up from the er. This thanksgiving he stole and totaled my car. It's been a rough ride, but I thank you with all my heart. I sent the book to a friend of mine who needs it, but asked her to send it to my ex when she is done.
I received this book on friday and had it read by saturday. I am a juvenile probation officer and work with lots of kids that are addicts. This book put a lot of things in perspective for me and I know that anyone that reads it will only gain knowledge and better understand the disease. Thanks for publishing this book and sharing your life with the world!!!
Unfortunately, I can relate to this woman's story. I, too, went through most of the same experiences and emotions. I saw the way my family was torn apart, brought to our knees, begging and praying for something to change. I saw my beautiful boy turn into something I no longer understood. So many sleepless nights...hating for the phone to ring, but at the same time, hoping it would so I would know he was safe.
I could not bring myself to take the same brave steps the author took. It was just too hard, but I admire people that can do that.
Sadly, my son died because of his disease of addiction to drugs. I got that phone call...He had overdosed. He loved us so much, I know he never thought that would happen to him. He would never have wanted to hurt us so much.
Thank you for sharing your journey with us. Even now it helps to know there are other mothers out there that know how hard the struggle was...is.
