I first heard this story in grade school read by our teacher -- must've been 65 years ago. It has always stuck with me. Now I've read it again. And it still has all the charm and pinpointed lessons of the results of pigheadedness about what is pigs and what isn't. Just to think -- it all began with two ordinary guinea-pigs delivered to a railway station to be picked up by the customer -- at a shipping cost of 25 cents each -- if they were pets! But if they were livestock, than it would cost 30 cents each. For that 10 cents total difference we get hilarity and humanity spelled out so grippingly. Now this edition of this novella will cost you -- nothing! FREE. What a treat you are in for, as I was...and will be again. This story never grows old because it's about "following the rules" and how complicated even the simplest rules can become.

Pigs is Pigs Ellis Parker Butler 9781296638832 Books Reviews
My 82 year old father recommended this when I told him about my granddaughter's goats. He said his father gave him this book to read when he was about 10 or so. The book is great! I love the Irish flair to it also since we are wee bit Irish. My granddaughter loved it too.
Pigs is Pigs is an old classic story that will have kids and adults laughing mightily. Try to find someone who can fake an Irish accent read it out loud at a family gathering.
This is the definitive work showing how a simple decision can be convoluted when placed in a Bureaucracy where thinking is discourage. Contract this story to recent FEMA foul ups and other government programs gone astray and you see why good plans go wrong. A good idea is codified to the point where the prime administrator is unable to make a decision and his superiors are afraid to take a stand.
Everyone is government should read this story!!!
Peculiar little story which has been around a very long time. Trekkies will immediately recognise the Tribbles. LOL. Once is probably enough but if you had read it when very young, you may want to revisit it.
My father (b. 1920) had a copy of this. We understand his father's problems with city folk as political correctness today.
P. C., city/country, aren't real; it is all about rules and procedures versus common sense.
An uncommon trait in any time.
This is a very funny short story of a bureaucracy run amok. It's a good tale with an unspecified regional dialect depicting a situation where one person's "common sense" and adherence to "rules" brings on hilarious consequences. It takes place near the turn of the last century.
This has to be one of the funniest books I have ever read. It speaks to bureaucracy in the face of hilarious reality. Walt Disney liked it so much he made it into one of his animations. Some of the language is dated and ethnically offensive, but the humour shines through, Only one typo that I noticed in this gem.
