Honestly, this book was a bit of a mixed bag for me.—which is something I don’t often say in 4-star reviews. The premise of the plot, with the archives and the time travelers and an ancient evil locked away in a black mirror, was fascinating and drew my attention to the story. I liked the characters (except the awful janitor who was your typical evil sidekick), and the book contained a lot of beautiful imagery and fantastical settings that kept me engrossed. However, I wish the book had taken itself a little more seriously. The humor and jovial attitude of the book made it seem a little like a cheesy SyFy channel show. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t what I was looking for. I wanted more tension, more drama, and instead I got a playful, fast-paced romance between two very different characters thrown together by the archives. Was it bad? No… but it wasn’t my thing.
Overall, I thought the book was interesting. The characters, plot, and settings were great—I just wasn’t fond of the execution as a whole. Still, it was an entertaining read, and if you’re looking for a fast-paced, light-hearted romance with a supernatural feel, this book may be the one you’re looking for.

I read the whole thing because I kept thinking I was missing something, that it would all make sense in the end. It really didn't. The whole book was an unenjoyable muddle. I think I skimmed at least half of it. I give it tow stars because the reveal at the end was clever, but everything else was pretty amateurish, overwritten, and cringeworthy. I couldn't bring myself to care about or believe in any of the characters, yet I kept reading, because I love time travel books, and I hoped something would change my mind. It didn't.
That I am in the very small minority to have this opinion, though, shows that there is indeed no one book for everyone and we all read books differently. In other words, don't let this nonspecific negative review sway you--you'll probably like this one.
Ms. Faulkner has written a very good book and pulled me in from the beginning. The characters grow in depth throughout the book, shows that they are not infallable, and well rounded. Ms Faulkner gives a hint of a beginning romance between the main characters. It's refreshing to read a book that the characters tat do not instantly fall in love. The setting is well developed and the reader feels like they can go to the area and find everywhere they are going. The twist of time travel through mirrors is a refreshing idea of time travel. The author's imagination is vivid and paints a beautiful picture of places and time!
I have really enjoyed reading this book, Mirrored Time. I couldn't put it down. I look forward to the next in the series by Ms Faulkner.
[JD Faulkner is going places! Her debut novel is a fantastic first foray into a world where anything is possible and time is fluid. Gwen is the kind of character I'd like to have as a best friend she's snappy, funny, self-depracating and full of sass. In fact, at the end of this book, I kinda felt like she was my best friend! The saucy Rafe is full of goose-bumpy awesomeness, and the story itself is a roller-coaster of fast paced, heart-pumping action, with bits of sweetness and saltiness thrown in. And there is quite the surprise twist, too! No spoilers! I'll just say I didn't see it coming, and I almost ALWAYS do, so Ms. Faulkner got me there! Well played!
Seriously, I first read Ms. Faulkner's excerpt in the Breakthrough Novel Award, where it is currently a quarter finalist Mirrored Time - 2014 ABNA EntryAfter reading the excerpt, I had to wait anxiously for it to be published so I could gobble up the whole thing. What a great read, and thank you Ms. Faulkner for publishing it on my birthday. What a great present!
Mirrored Time is an amazing, intricately plotted story that will keep you guessing to the end. The heroine is quirky and not at all your usual fare. She’s very much in her head which I can relate to. I loved her inner dialogue and the way it advances the story and also brought me closer to her. I pictured her as lovely, in an understated way, like the heroines of the vintage Gothic romances I devoured as a teen. In fact, (imho) Mirrored Time is a rather perfect blend of vintage Gothic romance (think Victoria Holt) and modern time travel fantasy.
Written in a unique, almost old-fashioned voice, the story twists and turns and keeps you flipping pages. It is the kind of book you want to stay up all night to finish, reading by lamplight (or kindle-light). Most epilogues repeat the end for you, just in case you didn’t get it the first time around. With JD Faulkner’s book I didn’t even realize I was reading an epilogue. Let me tell you, the last line is a juicy shocker. Oh yes. I can’t wait for the sequel.
JD Faulkner's first novel, Mirrored Time, was a great read. I liked watching Gwen's character grow stronger as time went on, and I'd really like to borrow Rafe for a while. Just to stash him in my house somewhere. He's a useful kind of guy to have around! But the part that I really loved was the whole concept of looping time threads. What a difficult concept to make viable-- and Ms. Faulkner did this wonderfully. A good mixture of humor, imagination, and adventure!
