I am so glad I came across this book. I started a new tradition this year with my boys who are 14 and 9. We are reading a Christmas book each night during advent, starting December 1st and ending Dec 24. Some of the ones AI had purchased on recommendations were a bit young for them. So after some more searching, I came across this book. It is a perfect fit! A great story about how a father's love for his son is shown in return when that son shows his love for his father by getting up early on Christmas morning to get the chores done for his dad. Seeing as I have two boys this is a perfect story to read with them, but no matter who is in your family, it showcases a great message of how acts of love are some of the best gifts of all.

This will be a regular in our advent reading every year!

Love reading this to my children for the very first time, that I was in tears when we finished it. It tells so much what Christmas is all about, the sacrifice and giving love to others.
This book will be cherished for years to come. My dad grew up on a Dairy farm and I gave this to my kids to share some of Grandpa's family history. My Dad's family really enjoyed the classic Christmas story about how gifts really are something we give from the heart and are not always about giving something. Sometimes a real gift is a thoughtful action. The illustrations are beautiful and really show what it is like to live on a Montana Dairy Farm in the 1930's, not sure if the author intended for it to be in Montana, but our Montana family really loved it.
This is one of my favorite Christmas story. I have another book, Mark Buehner illustrated, "Fanny's Dream." But this printing is very dark. I know they are evening/night scenes, but a lot of detail is missing because of the dark printing.
I read this story in our afterschool program. It held their attention and they were engaged with the story. The story has a wonderful message for children.
We collect Christmas stories. This one will add nicely to our collection. The story is a touching one. It shows how giving of ourselves is many times the best gift we can give. We read a different book each night in December. Then on Christmas Eve we read in Luke in the Bible about the birth of Jesus Christ.
My 12 year old daughter loves the pictures and the meaning behind the story. We get her a book every year for christmas and it gets harder every year to find a book with a meaningful story. I will enjoy reading this one to her kids some day.
A humbling and sober story but so beautifully written. This is such an amazing read aloud for the whole family at the holidays. It was perfect to talk about the passing of time and to stop and appreciate the time with family that we have right now. There was nothing extravagant about the Christmas celebration of the family in the story but instead makes you truly thankful for the gift of time with loved ones.
