Always love learning something new while I'm reading! Didn't know what a Shinigami was and now I do, lol.Kana's a paranormal investigator who helps out a family whose kid has been possessed by the above. Quick read that sets things up for the upcoming novels.
No spoilers but I really liked the twisty plot surprise ~ did NOT see that coming, especially as the MC is set up as a very "me first" sort of person.
This is going to be a fun series! 2 thumbs up!

Kana Cold Case of the Shinigami A Paranormal Thriller eBook KC Hunter Reviews
Good beginning to a new series! Interesting new heroine. Looking forward to next installment. Can't wait for next story and new monsters!
I came across this book via Facebook. Clicked on it out of curiosity. So glad I did. This is a short story to introduce you to an awesome set of characters, Kana and AJ. These two are paranormal investigators who have experienced the paranormal during childhood. I look forward to reading this series. First book comes out in March. Can't wait!
Fast paced read of a little girl tormented beyond her parents threshold of acceptance. At their wits end, hey desperately reach out to Kana Cold and AJ to investigate what is happening, identify if the paranormal is indeed involved, and help their four year old girl. Skeptical at first, the parents are soon believers that their daughter is not mentally ill, but rather suffering something more terrifying. This story is skillfully written and complete. It leaves us with the hope that more Kana and AJ stories will be forthcoming.
I received this book as an ARC for my honest opinion.
Although there were a few grammar mistakes. It doesn't take away from the story.
A little girl is being attacked by an unseen force. Her parents think she needs mental help. That is, until they see her hovering over her bed. Held up by something that they can't see.
They don't know what to do, so they look for help. And what they get is more than they expect.
Author KC Hunter’s inspired storyline, set in the US, introduces a Shinigami to paranormal investigator Kana Cold, who has some Japanese ancestry. This is an interesting choice of demons, because Commodore Matthew Perry and the US Navy forcibly opened Japan to Western trade in 1853—at cannon-point. Later, Western ideas about Death Gods were introduced to Japan, thus changing a Shinto spirit-being called Shinigami into a Death God. (See this info and more by Googling “Shinigami + Geller.”)
In this novella, KC Hunter introduces the Shinigami as a demon. Hazarding a guess, I’d say on a “demon spectrum,” it’s more like UF demons of the Dresden Files or Demon Accords—not the demon of The Exorcist. Perhaps this Shinigami won’t be as violent as Chris Gordon’s inner-demon. I also hope the Shinigami will remain true to its Asian roots by hewing to Eastern mythos.
This is a short novella, but efforts were made to develop the characters. I fell in love with Melody, the demon-possessed 4-yr-old girl. Kana Cold is a bit prickly and lacks people-skills, so she leaves most interpersonal communication with clients to AJ Guiscard, her paranormal investigation partner. The author has laid down hints as to the duo’s turbulent backgrounds, so readers should learn more about them in the coming novel(s).
I loved what most readers call “the twist” at the ending, because it’s a recurring theme in Japanese literature and films.
*Death Note 2006 and the manga series by ÅŒba Tsugumi & Takeshi Obata. For Obata’s art work Google “Shinigami + Death Note.”
Excellent short story.
Fast moving and held my attention to the end.
